A Design Method for a Variable Combined Brake System for Motorcycles Applying the Adaptive Control Method

The variable combined brake system (VCBS) is a mechanism for motorcycles to simultaneously activate the front and rear systems by using one lever or pedal. purpose reduce risk of rollover accidents due misuse when panic braking. Due its ability in wide variation range braking force distribution (BFD) ratios between wheels, VCBS can achieve high effort driving comfort performances, provided that BFD ratio designed appropriately. This paper aimed develop design method VCBS. A mathematical model derived, parameter matching applies adaptive control theory proposed. prototype built based on proposed method. straight-line test results show motorcycle equipped with effectively obtained performance deceleration. maximum deceleration an average 6.37 m/s2 (0.65 g) under handbrake 154.29 N. For failure, at 3.38 (0.34 g), which higher than homologation requirement 2.9 m/s2.
